Sell Through the Holidays

Selling a home during the holidays is a bit like hosting a party where the guests also inspect the plumbing.

The good news is that holiday buyers are real buyers. People touring homes between turkey and tinsel usually have a reason, like a job move, a school year, or a year-end goal. The trick is to make your home feel warm without making it feel cluttered.
Keep decorations simple. One tree, white lights, and a wreath on the door say welcome. Fifteen inflatable reindeer say something else. Pack away extra decor so buyers can picture their own holidays in the space. Out front, a few pots of evergreens, winter pansies, or ornamental kale hold up in cold weather and keep the porch looking fresh.

Be flexible with showings when you can, and ask your agent to schedule around your big family dates. A pan of cookies in the oven before a showing never hurt anyone's chances, either.

Amy Burakovsky and her team help sellers in Millburn, Short Hills, Summit, and Chatham plan a holiday listing so it works with the calendar and not against it. Watch the video above, then reach out when you are ready to talk timing. Let the guests come, and let them inspect. The plumbing is in good shape.

Hi, I'm Amy Burakovsky. Selling during the holidays? You can do it, and you can still enjoy the season.

First, decorate lightly. One tree, white lights, and a wreath say welcome. Pack away the rest so buyers can picture their own holidays in your home.

Second, curb appeal. Pots of evergreens, winter pansies, and ornamental kale handle cold weather and look great by the front door.

Third, be flexible with showings. Holiday buyers are usually serious. Tell me your family dates and I will plan around them. And bake cookies before a showing. I am only half joking.
Happy holidays, and happy selling.
